28 December 2013

We have converted the Oral Cavity chapter to our new topic format.

As we update each chapter, we are adding images and links of recent Pathology related books that we think will be of interest to practicing pathologists, so you know what's out there.

How is the job market for Pathologists?  We are developing a new feature - Pathology Job statistics, using information from the Jobs posted at, which represents a large proportion of all Pathologist job postings.  Ultimately, visitors will be able to analyze the data themselves, but for now, we will provide basic information per quarter (3 month period), including the number of job postings, % academic versus non-academic postings, locations of postings and what specialties are in high demand.   Contact Dr. Pernick at with your comments.

In response to requests from Pathologists, we will be adding a list of all Reference labs (for specimen testing or second opinions) with a short survey of what they provide and their contact information.  This will help you when you have laboratory tests, or molecular / IHC testing that your lab does not provide.  There is no charge to be on this list, so we intend to make it as complete as possible.  Our target deadline for the initial list is January 24, 2014.  If interested, contact Sara Halladay-Klakulak at

Today we added a new Section to the Salivary Gland chapter, Cytopathology Competency / Milestone Assessment, written by Michelle R. Pramick, M.D. and Zubair W. Baloch, M.D., Ph.D. The section is complete, but we may add cytology images in the future.  Let us know what you think.  We previously added a similar section to the Thyroid Gland chapter, and plan to add new sections on Gyn Cytopathology to the Cervix-Cytology chapter and Molecular Cytopathology to the Molecular chapter.  Let us know if you have any comments.

Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays / Happy New Year!  This blog will be written primarily by Nat Pernick, M.D., owner / founder of  I'll try to let you know what we are working on, future plans, and respond to your comments / concerns as expressed in emails, telephone calls or in person at conferences.

Today, a pathologist called indicating that from some (but not all) of his computers, there appears to be a block to using our website.  This is the first time I have heard this complaint, and we are still trying to find the problem.  It appears that his ISP (internet service provider) is behind the block.  They may have looked at some of the terminology or images on our website and assumed that this was a porn site.  They may have been upset that there was too much use of our website.  Amazingly, some businesses have been upset because a link from our website to theirs was giving them too much traffic. I'll let you know what the problem turns out to be.

We are finishing up converting all 6700 topics to our new Topic format, with thumbnails and an easier to read look.  We should be finished by the USCAP 2014 meeting. We currently have about 12 chapters that still need to be converted, at least in part.
