27 June 2016: A small primer on our internal textbook structure

It may be helpful for visitors to understand our internal textbook structure.  Each topic is associated with a particular chapter.  It will have the same advertisements as that Chapter's main page, and will appear on the Chapter's superpage (added when the entire chapter is converted to our new format).

Topics that are relevant to additional chapters will also be listed in their Table of Contents, but will have different ads, and will not appear in their Superpages.

22 June 2016: New Cytopathology Competency Assessments

In the Cytopathology chapter, we have added Cytopathology Competency Assessments for Breast, CNS, Cervix, Mediastinum, Molecular, Salivary Glands and Thyroid.  The Cytopathology Competency Assessments provide a comprehensive outline of important topics which should be mastered during residency and fellowship training in cytopathology, in a number of subject areas.  While there are a number of ways in which exposure to these subject areas may be obtained, these outlines represent realistic goals for all trainees in order to ensure competency in the field.

16 June 2016: Changes to Website statistics

As noted in our June 8, 2016 blog, we recently started using the CloudFlare content delivery network to improve the speed and security of PathologyOutlines.com, which has forced us to change how we track website statistics.  Previously, we used Webalyzer, provided by our website host, to track visits, but with CloudFlare, many visitors actually view the content on a "proxy server", or a copy of our website, so our website host never sees the traffic.

We are now using Google Analytics to track statistics.  Instead of visits, they use sessions, which is somewhat comparable although the details and values differ (click here for more details).    The advantage of Google Analytics is that it will be embedded on every page, and so can be tracked.  Right now, it is embedded on our Home Page, main chapter pages, all pages referenced directly from the Home Page, as well as about 1/3 of our 7,000 topic pages.  As a result, we believe the values for Sessions and Users are correct, except when visitors enter our site through a topic page (via a search engine) or for users who have disabled Javascript, which prevents page tracking.  The page views statistic is an undercount, but will be become more accurate as we convert the remaining 2/3 of our topic pages to our new format, which automatically includes the Google Analytics script / code.

Let us know if you have any questions.

8 June 2016: Faster website access

We have made some changes to our website to reduce wait times and down times.  We have added a content delivery network, which basically makes copies of our website and distributes it to dozens of servers throughout the world.  The advantages are (a) when you access PathologyOutlines.com, you are accessing a server close to you, which reduces wait times, (b) there is less load on our server, reducing wait times, (c) there is less likelihood of a slowdown because of a malicious attack on the server, since users are not actually accessing our server most of the time, and because the Content Delivery Network has specific protections against these attacks, (d) the site is almost never down, because users can be routed to copies worldwide.  Let Dr. Pernick know if you have any questions or concerns at NatPernick@gmail.com.
