9 December 2016: Support the Detroit College Promise

Thanks for your support of The Detroit College Promise, the charity we sponsor.  At this time of year, we are asking for your help to strengthen public education in Detroit by making a charitable contribution to support The Detroit College Promise.  To donate, click here.

Last year, the Detroit College Promise merged with the Detroit Public School Foundation to have a greater impact on improving public education in Detroit.  All donations go into a special account for our program.  I am a member of the DPS Foundation Board, and because of my belief in the importance of this program, recently made a contribution of $5,000.

This past summer, we awarded 47 students over $25,000 in funds.  New to the program, we are assigning a coach to each recipient for one year to offer mentoring and guidance during what sometimes proves to be a difficult transition.

With your support (click here), we can continue to encourage Detroit students to be the best they can be.

Thanks in advance for your generosity.

- Nat

Nat Pernick, M.D.
Founder, The Detroit College Promise

P.S.  We will list all pathologist / pathology related donors in our website news email, but please send me a short email that you have made a contribution, so we don't miss anyone.

27 October 2016: New Jobs Page

We are pleased to announce our new Jobs page, highlighting our extensive collection of Pathologist and pathology related jobs (currently 255 active jobs).  The advantages of the new format are faster posting and removal of job ads, faster loading of the Jobs page, and a more uniform format for the Job ads.  We have tried to mimic the prior jobs page as much as possible to minimize confusion, but want to highlight these new features:

* We have a new subspecialty category, "no subspecialty", and will start putting ads in this category, as appropriate
* Washington, D.C. ads are no longer listed under District of Columbia
* To see all ads sorted by location, click on the Jobs by Location link
* We now have a count of the number of Job ads posted

26 October 2016: Coolest thing contest

Congratulations to Dr. Oana C. Rafael, Virginia Commonwealth University, for this winning suggestion about the coolest thing to add to PathologyOutlines.com's website:

How about a e-Journal Club? Or a mentorship program, where top/well-known pathologists would directly answer trainees' questions?

We plan to start an e-Journal newsletter which goes out every 2-3 months, and highlights important articles selected by one of our editorial board members in his/her specialty.

Regarding Mentorship, we are exploring this feature for issues relating to the Career of Pathology, but not regarding specific diagnostic challenges.

Here are some other suggestions, and our responses:

1. Image database / more images

Our goal is to work towards having all images hosted on our server so the links never go bad.  This will be done through contributions by the authors of the topics, as well as images contributed by Dr. Mark Wick and noncopyrighted images from the AFIP Third or Second series.  In effect, our website is currently an image database, sorted by chapter and topic, although many images are actually housed on other servers.

2. Have regular quizzes based on website content

Short term, we plan to add a board review type question to each Case of the Week.  Long term, we plan to add a Question bank based on the Essential Features which are part of all newly written or updated topics.

3. Monthly cartoon or funny photos of specimens

We are discussing.

4. Digital slides, including rare cases with annotation capability

We are asking our authors to link to relevant digital slides available on the web for each topic.  At this point, we do not have the capability to set up our own digital slide server.

5. Clinical / histology images (side by side), covering the life cycle of the lesion (to wit, incipient lesion, full blown, and resolving or late stage)

This is most applicable to Derm - we will ask the authors of topics to try to include these types of images

6. More links to immunostains and diagnoses in topics

We are doing more of this, but at this time are of the view that too many links are distracting, so we focus on links in the Positive / Negative stain sections and under Differential Diagnosis.

7. Ideas that we may pursue, but would be difficult for us to do.  But we welcome the suggestions / assistance of others who are interested:

- Profile of an interesting pathologist
- Video of a pathology grand round
- Image diagnosis contest
- Pathology Chatbot, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chatbot
- Review of testing in integrative / holistic medicine
- User ratings or curated comments of texts and educational courses
- Database for IHC staining of various tumors

26 October 2016: Survey Results

We have now compiled the results of the Surveys from the ASCP and CAP conferences.  Most people liked the website and used it regularly, but these are the main suggestions / comments, and our responses:

1. Pictures don't load / more pictures (gross, micro)

This was a common response.  To fix this, we are:
(a) continuing to convert all 7000 topics to our new Template format, and fixing any bad links.  We are removing most of the Nature links, which did not work because Nature.com is blocking our website.
(b) asking Authors to contribute their own images, which we host on our server, so the links will never go bad
(c) planning to add thousand more images, beginning in 2017, from the AFIP third series and the Dr. Wick collection (with his permission).

2. Add image server / allow user submissions.

Users can submit images which they own to us for posting.  We will use whatever attribution they want, or anonymous.  There is no payment for image submissions.  Turn around is typically within 2 weeks for posting.

3. Mobile device app

We cannot put the entire website on an app, because it is too big.  However, we are making the website more mobile friendly.  In addition, we are considering an app for parts of the website - let us know your suggestions on what to start with.

4. More references, more up to date references, more IHC detail

We are asking contributing authors to do this.

5. Better search bar

We have posted a blog entry on Search techniques early today, which may help.

6. List most popular searches, most popular pages

We will start doing this.

7. Residents forum

We are not pursuing this at this time - there appear to be alternatives at other sites.

8. More clinical pathology

We are working on getting authors to write more in these areas.

9. Miscellaneous - more clarification would be helpful

- Improved website design / user interface
- Member section
- Updated fellowship information
- Helpful resources page

To respond, please contact Dr. Pernick at NatPernick@gmail.com.

26 October 2016: Feature of Month - Search techniques

To help visitors get the most from PathologyOutlines.com, we are starting a Feature of the Month.  This month, we are highlighting search techniques.

First, to search for a topic, use the Google search box in the upper right corner of most pages (it may not be present on topic pages not yet converted to our new format, but the conversion should be completed by March 2017).

Second, to search for text on a particular page, use the search features of your browser, such as Control F in Firefox.

Third, many visitors go to Google.com, then type
PathologyOutlines.com + search term
and have reported that this is useful.

We have a new feature - Cite this page.  It appears just below the Table of Contents for every topic converted into our template format (currently 30% of topics, our target completion date for all topics is March 2017).  It gives a standard format for using the Topic as a reference in a publication.
