13 July 2015: Why is this job still posted if it's filled?

We sometimes get asked why jobs remain posted on our Jobs page if a pathologist is told that it's filled.

We post the ads until the positions are filled, up to 6 months.  We rely on the advertisers to tell us if the position is filled.  We do call them after 3-4 months, but rely on their representations.  Some of them have actually filled the position, but like to keep the ad open until the pathologist actually starts the job and has been there a while - there is nothing we can do about that.

In our experience, most non-academic positions are pretty much filled within 1-2 months of posting, so a position posted in February is likely filled, no matter what they say to you.  As you may have experienced, courtesy and professionalism seem to have been lost in the hiring process.  When we hire, we try to set a good example, by responding to all inquiries in a timely manner and being as honest as we can be.  But not everyone does that.
